Sponsor Our ArticlesOxford, Mississippi, is set to get a new drive-thru coffee shop as the Planning Commission recently approved a special exception for Shadrachs Coffee to open its second location. The new coffee establishment will be located at 2405 South Lamar Blvd., conveniently positioned just south of the newly built Oxford Self Storage and directly across from the Harlan Drive intersection.
The approved site plan is currently under review by the city planning staff. The addition of a drive-thru service is a key aspect of the new coffee shop, as drive-thrus are only allowed in Traditional Neighborhood Business zoning by obtaining a special exception.
Shadrachs plans to utilize the existing two curb cuts at the location, designating the southern entry as an exit only. This setup is aimed at directing incoming traffic to the northern entry point, which should help with traffic flow. The design features 11 stacking spaces in a double lane on the east side of the building, followed by a parking area. Additionally, there will be about six more stacking spaces in a single lane on the west and south sides. This design is similar to what is currently in use at the West Jackson Shadrachs location.
City planning staff assessed that the proposed amount of stacking is adequate. However, Shadrachs will be responsible for managing the drive-thru queue to ensure that it does not spill over into public areas. During the commission meeting, two letters of objection were received from community members, with one local resident raising concerns about potential traffic backups stemming from the drive-thru.
City Attorney Pope Mallette addressed the potential issues, informing the commission that if the queue exceeds the designated area and poses a safety concern on public property, Shadrachs would need to come back for reconsideration of their special exception.
The new location is expected to bring a boost not only to coffee lovers but also to the local economy. Shadrachs has built a solid reputation in its first location and seems poised to deliver the same quality and experience in the new shop.
As the planning staff continues to review the site plan, residents and coffee enthusiasts alike await what promises to be a vibrant addition to Oxford’s growing food and beverage scene. The interest in the new Shadrachs surprises no one, considering the city’s penchant for its coffee culture.
The combination of a drive-thru service and its strategic location aims to attract more visitors and residents looking for a quick caffeine fix. As the final plans develop, Shadrachs Coffee’s expansion marks an exciting chapter for the local community, making it easier for everyone to enjoy their favorite brews.
