Desoto County is buzzing with pride as several outstanding students have received prestigious scholarships that highlight their academic excellence. These remarkable achievements are not only a testament to the hardworking students but also reflect the strong support from their schools and communities.
Epps Dye Shines as a Newman Scholar
First up on the list is Epps Dye, a remarkable student hailing from Northpoint Christian School. Epps has been honored as a Newman Scholar and awarded the W.R. Newman Scholarship from the University of Mississippi. This impressive scholarship is worth a whopping $40,000 over four years, making it one of the largest undergraduate scholarships offered at the university.
To be eligible for this scholarship, students must be incoming freshmen, Mississippi residents, and have a stellar academic and leadership record. Epps, who is set to study biomedical engineering at the Oxford campus, has not only achieved an incredible ACT score of 36 but has also been recognized as a National Merit Finalist. His multi-talented skillset shines through as he juggles academics, athletics, music, and theatre, truly embodying what it means to be a well-rounded student.
As the Star Student and Valedictorian of his class, Epps has taken on numerous leadership roles, including serving as President of the Student Body and Vice President of the National Honor Society. He is an active member of several organizations like Mu Alpha Theta, the NCS Track Team, and the NCS Theatre Department. Additionally, Epps contributes his musical talents as the pianist for the Praise Team and takes a leadership role in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). He credits Northpoint Christian School for providing him with numerous opportunities to develop his leadership skills, leading him to this significant achievement.
Marianna Fulcher Celebrates Big Win
Next in line for recognition is Marianna Fulcher, a freshman majoring in data science from Hernando. Marianna is one of the lucky recipients of the Sonny Montgomery Presidential Endowed Scholarship at Mississippi State University. This scholarship is not only considered one of the most prestigious undergraduate awards at the university but it also covers the cost of attending MSU for four years while providing additional educational enrichment opportunities, such as study abroad and research fellowships.
To qualify, students needed a minimum ACT score of 30, a SAT score of 1330, and a core or overall GPA of 3.75. Marianna and her fellow Presidential Scholars are expected to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.4, but with her dedication to academics, there’s no doubt she’ll succeed!
Tyrone Chatman Jr. Earns Esteemed Scholarship
From the Lake Cormorant Class of 2024, Tyrone Chatman Jr. has also made headlines by receiving the Walter S. Bounds Scholarship of Excellence. This scholarship is awarded to exceptional students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and community service. Tyrone finished first in his class as the salutatorian with an impeccable 4.0 GPA while being actively involved in the high school marching band.
The Bounds Scholarship is bestowed by the Mississippi Association of School Superintendents with the intent to promote capable leadership among Mississippi’s youth. Tyrone will be moving on to attend Tuskegee University in Alabama, where he no doubt will continue to shine.
