Exploring the Charming Town of Oxford, Mississippi

Stepping into Oxford, Mississippi, feels like walking into a warm embrace of Southern hospitality blended with the spirited passion of collegiate life. As a transplant from Chicago who had the pleasure of studying at the University of Alabama, I was eager to experience the energy of another SEC college town. Oxford is not just about the athletics – although the love for Ole Miss football is palpable; it’s a vibrant community steeped in arts, culture, and history.

Where to Start Your Adventure

Begin your journey at the heart of Oxford, known as The Square. This bustling hub is home to an array of tantalizing shops, bars, and restaurants that cater to both students and locals alike. Trust me, you’ll want your camera ready because the Southern architecture here is just lovely and photogenic!

One of my favorite spots was Square Books, a cozy independent bookstore that boasts more than just a great selection of literature. Established in 1979, it has expanded to include various additional stores nearby, each possessing its unique charm. Don’t miss out on catching a book signing if you can – there’s something special about meeting authors where they once stood!

Cultural Experiences Await

Your next stop should definitely be Rowan Oak, the former residence of literary giant William Faulkner. The home, preserved as a museum, showcases Faulkner’s enduring legacy and is a treasure trove of interesting artifacts. Tucked away in a lush green area, it perfectly complements a peaceful afternoon stroll after your tour.

And if you’re in the mood to shop, make sure to visit Neilson’s Department Store. You’re stepping into history here; founded in 1839, it’s Oxford’s oldest store and a delightful place to find unique clothing and home goods.

Indulgent Delicacies in Oxford

Foodies will feel right at home in Oxford. My culinary adventures included a visit to Snackbar, a delightful gem run by renowned Chef John Currence. This place emphasizes farm-to-table principles and is famous for an ever-changing oyster selection. I savored some local oysters paired with mignonette dressing that made my taste buds sing.

For something comforting, Saint Leo is a must-try. I delighted in divinely crafted artisanal pizzas, and their off-menu lavender lattes were a whimsical treat. And if tapas-style dining interests you, The Sipp offers dishes perfect for sharing, like a charcuterie board adorned with local delights – an absolute hit for our group!

Cheers to Great Drinks!

After a day filled with exploration, I found myself at Bar Muse, a hidden gem tucked inside The Lyric. With an inventive cocktail menu, I couldn’t resist trying drinks that promise a twist on your usual tipple, like their refreshing Gyro Trip. For a lively vibe while catching the latest football game, Funkys is the place to be, serving wonderfully whimsical daiquiris in a fun atmosphere.

Relaxing in Style

At the end of the day, where to rest your head? The Graduate Hotel makes an enchanting choice for your stay. With its collegiate-themed decor, friendly service, and proximity to The Square, it provides both comfort and convenience. The rooftop bar, The Coop, is a perfect spot to unwind and soak in the views of this charming town.

The Oxford Experience Awaits You

So, whether you’re an SEC sports fan looking to catch a game, a literature lover on the trail of history, or just someone in search of some really good eating, Oxford, Mississippi has something for everyone. It embodies that perfect blend of Southern charm, academic fervor, and artistic inspiration, making it an essential stop on any travel itinerary.
