Oxford, MS – The clock is ticking for residents of Oxford and Lafayette County who have until Wednesday, May 8, to make their voices heard and nominate someone they consider the best volunteer of the past year. The Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce has extended the submission deadline for its prestigious “Citizen of the Year” award.
Since 1972, the Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce has been recognizing individuals annually for making positive contributions to Oxford, Lafayette County, and the University of Mississippi. The “Citizen of the Year” award aims to highlight the work of those who’ve had a direct, sustained impact on the community through volunteer service.
If there’s a person in your mind deserving this recognition, now is the time to act. Individuals who have made positive contributions that exceed the expected, and who are seen as role models for good citizenship in an unpaid capacity, are ideal candidates for this award. The successful nominee will be announced at the Chamber’s annual meeting luncheon on May 22.
Formerly known as the “Retired and Senior Volunteer Program,” the Chamber’s outreach is now under the banner of “Stronger Together Oxford.” It recruits volunteers of all ages and celebrates their contributions to the community.
A completed nomination form along with the necessary letters and a biography outlining the nominee’s achievements must be submitted for consideration. The documents can either be mailed to “Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce, Attention: Citizen of the Year, P.O. Box 147, Oxford, MS 38655” or emailed to Pam@Oxfordms.com. Submissions can also be dropped off at the Chamber’s office, located at 299 W. Jackson Ave. For further inquiries, the Chamber of Commerce can be contacted at 662-234-4651.

The extended deadline is a great opportunity for community members to nominate someone deserving of this honor. Celebrating the great work of community citizens is essential as it encourages more community involvement, fostering a stronger sense of unity and cohesiveness within Oxford and Lafayette County.
