Student Veterans in Oxford Receive New Vehicle Donation

OXFORD, Miss. – In a generous act aimed at supporting those who have served in the military, the University of Mississippi’s Office of Veterans and Military Services (VMS) has received a substantial gift: a shiny new 2024 Chevrolet Suburban High Country. This fully loaded vehicle will provide essential transportation for student veterans, thanks to an anonymous donor who wanted to express gratitude for their service.

The Gift’s Purpose

The donor, an Ole Miss alumnus, emphasized the importance of supporting those who have put their lives on hold to serve the nation. “We owe such a debt of gratitude to those who’ve served all over the world to support and defend the Constitution,” the donor stated. “This gift is a way to help them continue to pursue the American dream.”

With this new vehicle stationed at the George Street House, the headquarters of VMS, the office plans to use it for various transportation needs. This includes taking student veterans to conferences, medical appointments at the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson, and even grocery deliveries for veterans without cars.

Acknowledgment of the Need

The donor expressed concern about the lack of transportation for veterans, stating, “It is unconscionable to think those who have served keep us all safe may not have needed safe transportation.” The hope is that this donation will significantly ease their mobility challenges.

Andrew Newby, the assistant director of VMS, highlighted the immediate positive impact of the gift. “This gift is incredible, and it has made an immediate impact on how veterans can engage others outside of campus,” he said. Newby explained that the office often collaborates with external organizations to support veterans and that this vehicle will enhance these interactions.

Supporting the “Welcome Home” Campaign

The donation is part of the VMS’s “Welcome Home” campaign fund. This fund is designed to provide support for student veterans adjusting from military to civilian life and to address their specific needs. Newby pointed out that many of these individuals sacrificed their youth to serve the nation and deserve recognition and assistance as they transition to higher education.

“Many of these student veterans gave away their 20s to go and do what this nation asked of them,” Newby remarked. “This gift has made military-connected students feel seen, and it reinforces the belief that they can succeed in college.”
