Charleston, South Carolina, Remembers a Beloved Educator and Lawyer
The community of Charleston, South Carolina, is coming together to honor the life of the renowned Richard Gershon, who sadly passed away at the age of 67. A cherished educator, lawyer, and leader, Richard left an indelible mark on the lives of his many students and colleagues. His impact rippled through various law schools he served, from Ohio to Oxford, making him a beloved figure wherever he went.
A Life Full of Curiosity and Kindness
Richard was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Shifra and Nathan Gershon. He grew up in the bustling city, which he fondly recalled during trivia nights—often proclaiming that “Atlanta” was the answer to many questions! After completing his undergraduate degree in political science at the University of Georgia, he pursued further studies at the University of Tennessee for law school, followed by his LLM in Taxation at the University of Florida.
Despite briefly practicing law at the beginning of his career, Richard discovered his true calling lay in teaching. With incredible enthusiasm, he embraced the title of educator. When asked about his profession, he would cheerfully declare, “I’m a teacher!”—always putting his students at the heart of his work.
Teaching Legacy and Leadership
Richard began his teaching career at Ohio Northern University College of Law, before making significant contributions at Stetson University College of Law, where he also held the title of associate dean. He then took on the roles of dean and professor at Texas Wesleyan University School of Law. His journey continued in 2003, when he became the founding dean of the Charleston School of Law.
In 2010, Richard accepted a new chapter as dean and professor at the University of Mississippi School of Law. His tenure across various academic institutions demonstrated his commitment to legal education and nurturing future attorneys.
Richard’s Enduring Legacy
Those who knew Richard will fondly remember him for his contagious laughter, boundless curiosity, and unwavering kindness. His spirit touched many lives, and he cultivated relationships that extended beyond the classroom. He is survived by his wife, Donna Levine; his children, Michelle, Ben, Claire, and Eve; his siblings, Susan Tourial, Charles Gershon, and Ellen Banov; along with a host of beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Special Memorial Service
The community is invited to gather and celebrate Richard’s life at a memorial service scheduled for Sunday, December 29, 2024, starting at 3:00 PM Eastern Time. The service will be held at J. Henry Stuhr, located at 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
