Oxford Fisherman Triumphs at MLF Phoenix Bass Fishing League Tournament

Brilliant Win for Local Boater Blake Hodge

In an extraordinary demonstration of skills and perseverance, Oxford resident and experienced boater, Blake Hodge, brought great honor to his city as he triumphed in the exciting MLF Phoenix Bass Fishing League Tournament. Hosting an impressive five-bass limit that tipped the scales at 17 pounds, 6 ounces, Hodge emerged a champion on the thrilling Saturday event held on Grenada Lake.

Victory Secured: A Play-by-play

The tournament, which marked the second event of the season for the Mississippi Division of the Bass Fishing League (BFL), was organized in partnership with the Grenada Tourism Commission. Participants and spectators braved the heavy rains that had filled Grenada’s waters beyond its banks, soaring the anticipation of a gripping contest.

Hodge wooed victory by sailing his boat into the newly flooded fields of grass, following the rising water. The angler discovered hard patches amidst grass flats where bass sought refuge during his practice a few days prior. “I had three spots that I could put the nose of my boat in and make the same cast over and over,” he disclosed. His winning strategy involved casting his line into shallow waters as low as 6 inches, using his favorite SPRO Bronzeye Frog lure. This resulted in two magnificent keepers that were crucial to his victory.

Upon exhausting the lure’s potential, the Oxford native adjusted his strategy and explored deeper post-spawn areas. He was rewarded with generous bites using a BOOYAH Covert Spinnerbait, complete with orange and gold blades. Between making the right decisions and employing patience, Hodge managed to land six fish, winning by a fantastic lead of 6 pounds.

Other Tournament Finishes

Hodge’s praiseworthy achievement earned him a prize purse of $9,813, including the coveted $7,000 Phoenix MLF Contingency Bonus. Barrett Saunders placed second, followed by Dakota Fleming, filling the podium with their impressive performances. Complete results of the tournament can be accessed at MajorLeagueFishing.com.

Extra Feathers in Hodge’s Cap

In addition to his tournament victory, Blake Hodge’s catch included a champion bass weighing an impressive 6 pounds, 3 ounces. This feat gained Hodge one more accolade – the Berkley Big Bass Boater award and a sum of $265 on top of it.

A Welcomed Success in Uncertain Times

The high water level leading into the tournament raised apprehensions, with Hodge himself skeptical about landing a keeper. However, his outstanding victory against such odds not only threw a celebratory glow on him but also provided an inspirational story of resilience and skill in an unpredictable sport.
