April Garden Lecture Sheds Light on Drought Conditions

In Oxford, the month of April marks not only the undeniable arrival of spring but also a critical opportunity for garden enthusiasts to gain fresh insights into the ever-relevant topic of drought. Preparing for the drier months ahead, the Lafayette County Master Gardeners is hosting its annual Spring Lecture Series at the Lafayette County and Oxford Public Library.

The next lecture in the series, happening on April 4 at noon in the auditorium of the library, is free and open to the public, converging gardeners of all experience levels for a discussion on this urgent gardening issue.

Accomplished Speaker of the Day

The speaker for the April lecture is Dr. Eddie M. L. Smith, a man with impressive credentials, carving a name for himself ever since joining the Mississippi State University Extension back in 2008. Smith, currently the County Coordinator in Pearl River, was recognized as the State Master Gardener Coordinator of the Year in 2014.

Additionally, Smith’s expertise extends further as he holds a certification from the International Society of Arboriculture as a Certified Arborist.

A Passion for Plants That Weather the Heat

With his extensive background, Smith’s lecture entitled, “Creating Gardens that Thrive in Summer Heat” is expected to be an enriching experience for attendees. The talk will focus on the resilience of specific types of plants, particularly those becoming more necessary in landscaping due to unpredictable and harsh weather conditions.

Much of Mississippi has been exposed to drought conditions over the past year. The need for plants that can withstand dryer climates and provide a robust, beautiful garden is more significant than ever. In his lecture, Smith will expand on the landscaping techniques that can preserve and maintain gardens even when the heavens forget to spill their bounty.

Drought-resistant Gardening Solutions

Garden owners and enthusiasts attending the lecture will walk away with informed choices for plant selection that thrive in drought conditions. Apart from this, Smith will also be addressing effective landscaping techniques essential for helping plants endure periods of inadequate rainfall.

With the urgency of changing drought conditions, the upcoming lecture promises a wealth of knowledge for the local community. For any questions regarding upcoming garden lectures or to RSVP, interested parties are encouraged to contact lcmga39@gmail.com.
