Traveling Exhibit Chronicles Life and Legacy of Diplomat and Civil Rights Icon Andrew Young

Andrew Young: Diplomat and Civil Rights Icon Immortalized in Traveling Exhibit

The extraordinary life of Andrew Young, a titan of the Civil Rights movement, a former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and an integral aide to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., has been vividly captured in a traveling exhibit. Drawing unprecedented crowds, the exhibit opened at the University of Mississippi’s J.D. Williams Library on June 25, 2024.

Bringing History to Life

The exhibit, titled “The Many Lives of Andrew Young,” gives visitors unique insights into Young’s tumultuous journey through the lens of civil rights history. Comprising photographs, mementoes, and vivid narratives derived from Ernie Suggs’ biographical book, the exhibit aims to inspire and educate viewers about Young’s significant contributions to American society.

Celebrating a Groundbreaking Legacy

As the first African-American U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and a cornerstone of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s team, Young’s life is a testament to equality and resilience. The traveling exhibit, which remains at the J.D. Williams Library through July 31, strives to illustrate these aspects through his eventful journey. An inaugural reception graced by Young himself was held, followed by a book signing, making it a day to remember for attendees.

Relevance and Impact

Elizabeth Batte, the library’s Outreach and Strategic Initiatives librarian, emphasized the importance of Young’s legacy. “The life that Andrew Young lived is relevant not only to people in Mississippi but to our entire nation,” she said. “So, it’s special for us to host this exhibit. I hope that having Young visit helps younger people realize that the Civil Rights fight wasn’t that long ago, and these conversations are still relevant.”

Preserving Diversity and Inclusion

This comprehensive exhibit, funded by the James Armistead Brown Family Endowment, was hosted at the University of Mississippi as part of its commitment to preserving history and promoting diversity and inclusion. Andrew Young, expressing his anticipation for the event, stated, “I am eager to share my journey and discuss where we are in bringing diversity, equity, and inclusion to all, and the future of our collaborations”.

Welcoming all Visitors

The public is invited to witness the rich and eventful life of Andrew Young at the J.D. Williams Library any time during its operational hours. The exhibit presents a remarkable opportunity for those interested in the Civil Rights movement and the history of diversity and inclusion in the U.S. to witness first-hand the personal artifacts and narratives of a key player in these transformative events.
