In a significant announcement, the University of Mississippi revealed that eminent researcher Nathan Murray has been named as the director of the National Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA). Known professionally for his research in aeroacoustics, this appointment represents not only a career milestone for Murray but is also of deep personal significance.
Murray fondly recalls visiting the Acoustics building while it was under construction, a memory he held dear from his childhood. Recollecting the tour his grandfather gave when the framing was going up, this newest appointment is like a “momentous full-circle moment” for him.
The NCPA, established by Congress in 1986, has long served as a central hub for innovation and expertise in physical acoustics. The center’s role includes coordinating major acoustics research initiatives, providing academic opportunities for students, and offering research aid to experts worldwide.
In his new role as NCPA leader, Murray plans to maintain the world-class research expertise in physical acoustics developed by his predecessors, like the esteemed Henry Bass, and scientists such as Murray’s own grandfather. Murray’s goal is not just to make the NCPA an instrument of academic advancements but also to increase the understanding of acoustics among the general public. He seeks to break the common misconception of associating acoustics only with musical instruments and audio equipment and highlight its vast contributions in various sectors.
Murray has his sights set on complex material science, improving propulsion systems, integrating smart acoustic devices into autonomous systems, and enhancing drug delivery processes. His vision compels him to utilize the study of acoustics to address a wide array of real-world challenges.
A proven aeroacoustics researcher, Murray is not new to the halls of Ole Miss. It was his grandfather, F. Douglas Shields, who introduced him to the University through their joint participation in the foundational development and advancements in the field of Acoustics. Alongside his own father, Lambert Murray, a physics professor at Harding University, he spent his formative years contributing to acoustics research, a testament to his in-depth understanding of the field.
Murray obtained his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Oklahoma Christian University before pursuing his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Mississippi in 2003 and 2006, respectively. His positions over the years have seen him work in the realms of laser weapons, rocket propulsion, supersonic engines, turbulence dynamics in explosions, and much more.
With Murray at the helm of the NCPA, the research body stands poised for great strides in the field of Acoustics. His clear vision, in-depth expertise, and readiness to push boundaries position him well to not just uphold but enhance the legacy of this esteemed center. Murray’s new chapter as the director is widely anticipated to bring breakthrough developments to the front and drive a deeper understanding of acoustic science among various sectors and the public at large.
This appointment marks a new era for the NCPA and the beginning of a promising journey under the leadership of the accomplished aeroacoustics researcher, Nathan Murray. It’s an exciting time for the center and for the field of physical acoustics.
