In a significant announcement, the University of Mississippi revealed that eminent researcher Nathan Murray has been named as the director of the National Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA). Known professionally for his research in aeroacoustics, this appointment represents not only a career milestone for Murray but is also of deep personal significance.
Murray fondly recalls visiting the Acoustics building while it was under construction, a memory he held dear from his childhood. Recollecting the tour his grandfather gave when the framing was going up, this newest appointment is like a “momentous full-circle moment” for him.

On the Road of Academic Excellence
A proven aeroacoustics researcher, Murray is not new to the halls of Ole Miss. It was his grandfather, F. Douglas Shields, who introduced him to the University through their joint participation in the foundational development and advancements in the field of Acoustics. Alongside his own father, Lambert Murray, a physics professor at Harding University, he spent his formative years contributing to acoustics research, a testament to his in-depth understanding of the field.
Murray obtained his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Oklahoma Christian University before pursuing his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Mississippi in 2003 and 2006, respectively. His positions over the years have seen him work in the realms of laser weapons, rocket propulsion, supersonic engines, turbulence dynamics in explosions, and much more.
