Students celebrating their acceptance into an accelerated law program in Hattiesburg

News Summary

The University of Southern Mississippi has partnered with the University of Mississippi School of Law to create an Accelerated Law School Pathway, enabling students to complete a bachelor’s degree and a Juris Doctor in just six years. This initiative aims to streamline the educational journey for aspiring lawyers, allowing them to save a year compared to traditional routes. Enrollment for the program begins this fall, marking a significant step forward in legal education in Mississippi.

New Pathway for Future Lawyers in Hattiesburg!

Big news for students who dream of becoming lawyers! The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) has just teamed up with the University of Mississippi (UM) School of Law to launch an exciting new program that promises to fast-track future legal professionals. This collaboration aims to create an Accelerated Law School Pathway, allowing talented students to complete both a bachelor’s degree and a Juris Doctor (JD) in just six years, saving them a whole year compared to the traditional route.

Partnership Signed and Ready to Go!

On March 20, this partnership was officially sealed with a Memorandum of Understanding, following a meeting of the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning board in Jackson. This progressive step is already attracting attention and optimism from both institutions, setting the stage for aspiring lawyers to embark on their educational journeys with less time and hassle.

Why Is This a Game-Changer?

What does all this mean for students? Well, for starters, those who qualify can choose from a range of selected degree programs at USM, including criminal justice, legal studies, and political science. Typically, a bachelor’s degree takes four years to complete, but with this new agreement, students can achieve their undergraduate degree while simultaneously preparing to enter law school in just three years – a real time-saver for those eager to jump into legal careers.

Who Can Join the Program?

To get in on this fantastic opportunity, students will need to meet certain requirements. Aspiring participants have to complete three-fourths of their bachelor’s coursework and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.25. But that’s not all! Candidates must also tackle the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and apply for law school by December of their third year, ensuring that they are truly ready to take on the challenge of law school.

How Does It Work?

Once students are accepted into the program, they will earn their undergraduate degree from USM after completing the first year of law school. At the end of their legal education journey, UM will award the coveted JD, provided they fulfill all necessary law school requirements. This streamlined approach not only accelerates the educational process but also aligns perfectly with the standards set by the American Bar Association.

Building Bridges in Mississippi Education

This initiative marks the second accelerated law degree program USM has established this year, following a similar partnership with Mississippi College School of Law. In total, it represents the ninth partnership that UM School of Law has established with various universities across Mississippi, all aimed at creating smoother pathways to a legal education.

Get Ready to Apply!

For students excited about this new opportunity, they can start enrolling in the program this fall. It’s expected that this new pathway will not just open doors for students at USM, but also strengthen relationships between various educational institutions across the state, highlighting the importance of collaboration in higher education.

The Future Looks Bright!

With this partnership, the goal is clear: to empower future attorneys so they can step into their roles sooner and begin serving their communities effectively. Both USM and UM School of Law are optimistic about the prospects this program will create, aiming to enhance accessibility and efficiency in legal education.

So if you or someone you know is considering a career in law, this new program might just be the perfect opportunity to explore! Get ready, Hattiesburg—big changes are on the horizon for the future of legal education in Mississippi!
