An Abbeville man, identified as James Allen Colton, 58, has been arrested and charged with rape after a horrific assault incident that occurred on County Road 129.
The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office responded to County Road 129 on June 16 after receiving a distress call. The caller reported a woman showing up at their door, seemingly injured and bleeding.
Upon arrival, the deputies spoke to the victim who claimed to have been assaulted and sexually violated. Following this, she was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation and treatment.
When asked about her attacker, she identified the suspect as James Allen Colton, a resident of Abbeville.
Post the victim’s identification, Colton was arrested and transported to the Lafayette County Detention Center where he was formally charged with rape. He was initially booked on a significant bond of $100,000.
Nonetheless, a hold has been placed on Colton by the authorized Mississippi Department of Corrections, indicating that he will remain in their custody for the foreseeable future.
The shocking incident has stirred unease among local residents, particularly regarding the safety of women in the community.
This incident has triggered reiteration of the necessity for immediate and strict action against such violent incidents, ensuring justice for victims, and creating safe spaces for all citizens.
Given the grave nature of the charges against Colton, he will likely face severe legal repercussions if convicted. The charge of rape in Mississippi carries substantial penalties, including potential life imprisonment.
However, it needs to be mentioned that every individual has the right to a fair trial, and Colton will be provided with opportunities to defend himself in a court of law.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the incessant need to uphold the safety and security of the community, particularly that of vulnerable groups. It is hoped that justice will be delivered and that the victim receives the help and support necessary during this difficult time.
