The streets of Oxford are about to come alive with both local and international talent as the 27th annual Double Decker Arts Festival unfolds. The two-day festival, scheduled to take place on April 26 and 27, is a grand congregation of art aficionados, food lovers, and music enthusiasts. The event is set in Oxford’s historic downtown square, providing a quaint backdrop for the vibrant proceedings.
Initially held in 1997, the event draws its name from a red double-decker bus imported from England. The bus, introduced in Oxford in 1994 as a tourist attraction, remains the centerpiece of the iconic festival. It started as a small town affair and has splendidly transcended its original scale to become a major regional attraction. This year an estimated crowd of 75,000 is expected to participate in the cultural celebration.
Oxford native and artist Jules Mikell was selected to design the official artwork for this year’s festival. His remarkable creations will be seen on the official festival merchandise which includes commemorative posters and t-shirts, marking a significant achievement for a relatively new artist.
With over 140 art vendors showcasing their pieces, art lovers are in for a treat. The festival offers an eclectic shopping experience with unique artwork presented in a variety of mediums. Visitors can also enjoy a sneak peek of the works through a preview by the Oxford Artist Guild on the Square.
Festival-goers need not worry about food as trucks and tents from several local restaurants are set to serve a wide variety of culinary delights. From the savory to the sweet, there is something to satiate every palate.
The Double Decker Arts Festival hasn’t forgotten its younger fans. The family-friendly event will feature a Kids Zone that operates all day on Saturday in the parking lot of the Lafayette County Chancery Building.
Highlighting the musical line-up this year are headliners Christone “Kingfish” Ingram and Brittany Howard. The complete schedule of music performances over the weekend can be found on the festival’s website.
Festival attendees can enhance their experience by downloading the Double Decker Arts Festival mobile app. The app features all relevant information, an interactive map, and performer schedules. Patrons can customize their own schedule, look up art vendor booth numbers, and receive real-time updates from the organizers. The free app is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Attendees can stay connected and share their festival experiences via popular social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Indulge in the soulful essence of southern culture as the Double Decker Arts Festival celebrates its 27th edition in Oxford.
